Nexen Energy is responding to an incident at its Long Lake oil sands facility south of Fort McMurray, Alberta.
An explosion occurred at the company's Long Lake facility in northern Alberta on Friday afternoon.
The company’s emergency response plan has been activated and response personnel, including first responders from the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo, are on site.
The company has confirmed one fatality and a second person is in hospital. All other personnel are accounted for.
The affected facility has been shut down, and Nexen is stabilizing the scene. There is no immediate danger to the neighboring communities or personnel still on site, Nexen said in a statement.
Regulators have been notified.
