French oil major Total has reportedly been fined for a gas leak that occurred on its Elgin platform, in the UK North Sea, back in 2012.
It was recently reported that Total was due to appear in court as it had been charged for the Elgin gas leak under offshore installations regulations.
According to BBC, the French oil company will have to pay £1.125 million ($1.7M) for failings that caused one of the biggest gas leaks in the North Sea.
Total admitted the leak happened after miscalculating a plan designed to kill an unstable gas well on the platform, BBC said.
To remind, it took Total two months to plug the leak on Elgin’s G4 well. The incident occurred during work to plug and abandon the well, which was no longer producing gas.
